How to use the search tool

How to use the search tool?

Users can enter numbers, words, or phrases to return a list of related records. Select an option from the dropdown list to focus on specific areas.

Search options and what they do:

  • Default: A broad search of every domain, excluding those marked as "Select to use."
  • Ask NCRLAP: Returns a link to the ASK NCRLAP search results page, where results are shown. This option must be selected and it is excluded from the default search.
  • Assessment ID: Requires integer / number (no text). Returns links to assessment details pages.
  • Facility ID / Name: Returns links to facility details pages based on numeric and/or text queries.
  • Online manuals: Searches the Procedures Manual, NCRLAP Writing Rubric, and NC Additional Notes and returns links to relevant pages in the manual. This option must be selected and it is excluded from the default search.
  • Report: Searches report titles by default. If the option is selected, it will also search by report ID. Returns links to related reports.
  • Request ID: Requires integer / number (no text). Returns links to request details pages.
  • Resource: Searches the titles of resources found in Resources List.
  • Scoresheet: Requires integer / number. Returns links to the relevant scoresheets.
  • Staff member: Searches names of current NCRLAP staff by default. If the option is selected, it will also search by staff ID. Returns links to member staff details pages.

Number vs. text:

If integers or numbers are entered, the search will automatically focus on ID numbers and similar things. If text is entered the search will look for things that use characters like names, titles, phrases and so on. Searches are not case-sensitive (e.g., "sunshine" = "Sunshine").

Precedence, wildcards, and result limits:

The priority for returning results is (1) exact match then (2) partial match. For most numeric queries, partial matches use a "number-then-wildcard" method, like 123* or 40*. This means that the leading number or numbers must match. By contrast, most text queries use a "wildcard-then-text-then-wildcard" method, like *shine*. Thus text may be found in the middle of a longer string (e.g., "hin" is found within "sunshine").

The maximum number of results to display is ten records, however a maximim of three records are returned within each domain. For example, the query "40" will return ten records that include the top three matches for assessment ID and the top three matches for request ID and the top three matches for facility ID and the top 1 match for facility ID.
